(Today, I was on Tumblr and stumbled across a pot that I feel may help some of you with your writing! Give it a read, take it into consideration. c: )

    In all seriousness (and with all hyperbole banished and proper grammer returned), one bit of advice I will always give to an anspiring videogame creepypasta writer is this;

    Don’t make it explicit that what is happening to the game is down to the supernatural, unless you have a much grander sense of scope in mind. And even them be wary.

    Stories about explicitly haunted videogames, when they work, usually work by virtue of the fact that the game in question is a fictional creation. The suspension of belief only extends to the fact that supernatural things are happening, instead of stretching to the fact that we have to accept what we know about a game that exists in reality’s production and development cycle is, in the world of the story, a lie, cover up, or in a best case scenario it’s true, but it isn’t the WHOLE story. It pushes the willingness to have our disbelief suspended too far, and breaks it, and this is a storykiller, especially if you are going for a ‘THIS REALLY HAPPENED!’ angle, which so many creepypastas tend to do.

    And beyond that, it also leads way to overexplination, which is yet another story killer. Remember, the audience wants SOME answers, but they don’t want ALL of the answers, even if they THINK they do. Just as you can explain too little, you can explain too much, and when the air of mystery is evaporated entirely, we’re left with the facts, not cojuncture, that you’ve given us about your haunted game cartridge. And oftentimes, the explination you come up with won’t be satisfactory plain and simply because Horror is second only in Comedy in it’s difficulty to write. There is very little that universally scares all, for a start, and there is, by virtue of the concept of ‘pure originality’ being a complete farce, only so much you can do with a haunted game. And like any good story, what makes it entertaining is how the story is told, not the content itself, and it can be a NIGHTMARE trying to judge the scope of horror and how it’s going to be recieved, because unless you have a very wide test audience, there is no way to tell when you’re pushing one aspect too far into Narm, or if you’re too restricted.

    That doesn’t automatically mean that if you don’t rely on supernatural elements the story will be excellent, and making it scary or giving it enough hubris to leave an impact on its audience will still take a lot of work. But you save yourself a hell of a lot of trouble, and the audience will generally be more accepting of what you’re showing them if you give it an air of myster and don’t flat out say ‘ghosts did it’.

    Oh, I tell a lie, I do have one more advice vinegnette; cut the Hyper Realistic bullshit. Games glitching up and showing messed up shit in 8bit or 16bit? INFINATELY MORE TERRIFYING.

(thanks to this fine gentleman!)

Adding to this I'd also like to suggest a few points:
A. NEVER EVER EVER say 'this is a creepypasta.' Right there. DONE. The suspension of disbelief has been broken. The entire story is read in a different way.

B. Format is important! First of all, let me repeat the definition of creepypasta. Creepypasta comes from copypasta, meaning to copy and paste. A creepypasta is a horror-themed story or picture that is passed around forums or ims or emails because the readers wanted to share them. Making your creepypasta in a format that can be transported is important if you want it to actually fit the true definition of creepypasta- that's why SO many creepypasta are in image format!

C. Presentation is CRITICAL! Let me cite a few examples. Candle Cove was written in a format that appeared it was posted in a nostalgia forum, so it appeared as if many people were speaking about it. It was not in pure story format telling the reader about a show that was on in the eighties that didn't really exist, it forced the reader to gather that themselves in the same manner the subjects did. BEN was on youtube with the pretense that he found this cartridge and was taking video footage of it, and he provided that video footage. While it was obviously ROM footage there were still plenty of people who could not recognize that and suspension of disbelief was kept. LONeLINESS had videos, Lost Silver HIDDEN was a game, and you couldn't read the story to find out what you had to do next. Glitchy Red provided a picture of the game, False Red let you play it and hack it and do whatever you wanted.
Giving the reader something more than just your word can often sway their opinion from skeptical to curious, to not-so-sure. Providing sprites however will kill it, because they KNOW you made them. You could have ripped the sprite, but you didn't. If you could have you could have ripped the entire game. To give it an air of realism, try making some mock images and putting them on an R4 or a USB cartridge and then taking a picture of the mock image up on the game screen. Take videos. Pictures. Don't use photoshop. People can see photoshop errors. Make blood out of corn syrup and take a picture of that, it's harder to tell. Remember that picture of the Loch Ness Monster???

Last thing, somethign I have noticed. Good creepypasta does not focus on characters in the game. They, like the pixelized world around them are just the tools to tell the story with. The stories where a pokemon suddenly came to life and began speaking are rarely high caliber. The story is more important than the characters that live in it.

It's hard to be original, especially with so very many people writing these stories, but you HAVE to try. If you really want to make a high quality story, and you work hard at brainstorming, and presentation and the flow of the story itself then you CAN be successful.

Good luck everyone! I hope maybe this helps.

//edit///
for the love of all things good and holy, let someone proofread something before you post it. Make sure your grammar and spelling are all correct (unless, of course, they are intentionally incorrect) and that someone else read it and critiqued with you and told you what you could do better. Write, rewrite, and write again before it goes live.
